Woody Harrelson plays Mr. Peanut (yes, *that* Mr. Peanut) in The Electric State
Just how the hell did Woody Harrelson get the role of beloved mascot Mr. Peanut in a... post-apocalyptic robot saga? We'll do our best to explain

Despite its high-profile cast and crew, there's been little to no info released about Netflix's The Electric State, directed by the Avengers' own Russo Brothers and starring Millie Bobbie Brown and Chris Pratt. That changed slightly, however, at New York Comic Con 2024, during the Netflix-presented panel focused on the upcoming scifi epic. There was a lot of interesting stuff revealed on the empire Stage, from plot details to sneak peaks at the film's art, but perhaps the most unexpected bit of news was a casting reveal. Specifically, we learned that Woody Harrelson will be playing Mr. Peanut.
Yes, you read that correctly. Mr. Peanut, the mascot of the Planters brand of nuts, will appear in character in The Electric State, though not quite as a humanoid peanut. Let us explain.
As the Russo Brothers explained during the NYCC panel, The Electric State is set in an alternate universe 1990s in which "AI robots existed much earlier than they will," as Joe Russo put it. Essentially, large corporations began building intelligent machines as early as the 1950s in this universe, and after those robots demanded equal rights, a human/machine war ensued turning at least America into a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
But before all that happened, apparently, the Planters Company found the money to build their own AI program (and matching body) for their mascot, the be-monocled gentleman peanut that the world has come to love. And when the movie drops next spring, viewers at home will get to see Woody Harrelson take on the role, albeit in a CGI-animated robot body.
To be honest, it won't be the weirdest he's ever looked. Did you see his Cletus Kasady wardrobe?
The Electric State streams on Netflix March 14, 2025.
