Not every writer likes to thrust their characters into a shared universe, and it doesn’t look like V.E. Schwab is ready to start. While she is firmly keeping the vast majority of her novels in their own separate spheres of existence, her upcoming book, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil, takes place in the world she created in The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue – something that readers will realize only if they look very closely.

That juicy little morsel was dropped during her spotlight panel during MCM London EGX in October 2024. V.E. Schwab admitted that she had no ambitions to follow in Brandon Sanderson’s footsteps and tie her impressive library of work together in one world. However, she did tell the audience for the panel that there is “the smallest Easter Egg in the history of the world” that ties Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil into the world of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.

The author of the Shades of Magic series stopped short of saying what that Easter Egg is going to be or what the crossover between the two books would look like but did describe Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil as a loudly queer book about “toxic lesbian vampires” which is about the best way to sell a book, in our opinion. V.E. Schwab explained that this new book is the “feral older sister” of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue in tone and content, so fans of that novel will want to pick up Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil when it releases next year.
