Sometimes, you have to really have patience to make it as a good DM — but don’t take our word for it; during an appearance at Seattle's Emerald City Comic Con 2024, DM supreme Matt Mercer discussed the history of Ruidus, and how he planned to tackle the moon's saga in Critical Role's latest campaign… as well as the amount of time it took to get to where we’re currently at.

“I’ve had loosely the ideas for this since the beginning of the [first] campaign,” Mercer told the audience, “and then just being able to flesh it out slowly over time, hoping that we’ll get to a third campaign where we can actually get to these themes, and these reveals. And now we’re finally getting there, it’s super exciting — and there’s still so much. Like I said, it’s just scratched the surface. Like, there’s so much, and I don’t even know if we’ll get to all of it, because that’s how RPGs work.”

For anyone paying attention, the beginning of the first Critical Role campaign was all the way back in 2012. Which means that Mercer has been thinking about this for the last 12 years.

Joking about how much space the complete Critical Role mythology takes up in his brain, he added, “I just forgot most of my childhood, and my family. Occasionally, I have to re-meet Travis [Willingham, fellow cast member], but it’s worth it.”
