Endings are hard, folks. Sometimes writers go into a story not really knowing how everything will end. Sometimes they’ve planned that final scene out from the very beginning. And sometimes the ending causes a bit of controversy among fans. When Allegiant, the third and final book in the Divergent series, came out, Veronica Roth shocked a lot of fans with the ending, but it was always part of her plan for the series.

During her panel at New York Comic Con 2025 where she also shared some of her views on current events, Veronica Roth explained that when she first outlined the Divergent series, the ending was already there.

“Well, I think Divergent was the first series I ever attempted. Obviously, it’s my first book that was published, but I didn’t really… I thought I had outlined it. Yes, the ending was in the original outline, for better or worse. It was always part of the plan.”

For those who haven’t read the Divergent series, you should, but know that the ending is a bit of a sore spot for fans. If you know, you know, and we don’t want to spoil anything for fans who are just discovering the series, but it is worth knowing that the ending that caused so much grief among fans. Even all these years later, people still haven’t gotten over it. As controversial as it has become, the ending of Allegiant was always part of Veronica Roth’s plan for the Divergent books.
