During New York Comic Con 2025, Popverse’s Ashley V. Robinson got the chance of a lifetime: the opportunity to sit down in The Studio with the beloved and prolific author Ann M. Martin. The creator of The Baby-Sitters Club series, which has recently begun to be adapted to comics by Scholastic Graphix, NYCC ’25 was Martin’s first visit to a comic convention. And one of the exciting bits of information she shared with Robinson was which original Baby-Sitters Club cover painting she has in her possession.
The information was revealed when Robinson asked about Hodges Soileau, who painted the original Baby-Sitters Club covers for Scholastic. Noting that Soileau had recently sold many pieces of the original cover artwork, Robinson asked Martin, “Do you own any of the original covers?”
Without hesitation, Martin answered, “I own the original cover of Baby-Sitters Club #1, Kristy’s Great Idea. I know, it’s very, very cool.”
Robinson inquired whether she had had the art for a while or if she had gotten it when Soileau had sold several pieces of art more recently. Martin confirmed, “No, I got it maybe a couple of years after the series began? I’ve had it for a very long time.”
Finally, Robinson asked whether the painting held a place of honor or if, like many things, it was “tucked away and sleeping in a closet somewhere.” Martin stated, “It’s in my office.”
