The Critical Role cast can’t agree on the franchise’s most misunderstood character, but their picks are eye-opening
In honor of Legend of Vox Machina season 4, Critical Role's Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jafe, Marisha Ray, Travis Willingham, Ashley Johnson, LIam O'Brien, and Sam Riegel sat down to debate which of their characters was least appreciated

Talk all you want about which Critical Role is most beloved; a far juicier question is 'which Critical Role character is most misunderstood?' As part of the promotion for Prime Video's The Legend of Vox Machina, some of the core cast members got together to wade into those tempestuous waters and even ended up finding some common ground.
Specifically, it was OG Rolers Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jafe, Marisha Ray, Travis Willingham, Ashley Johnson, Liam O'Brien, and Sam Riegel answering that question, for a video posted to the Fall Damage YouTube page. The subject came up after one fan wrote in owning the hot take that Vox Machina's Keyleth was the most misunderstood character across CR's four core campaigns, three miniseries spin-offs, and multiple canon live-performances and one-shots. And the cast had thoughts.
"I would agree," said Johnson, to which Ray responded, "I would also agree."
"I don't know if she's the most misunderstood," chimed in Bailey, "I think she is the most, at least in the beginning, [...] underestimated is the right word."
"I think Scanlan is the most misunderstood character in all of Critical Role," Riegel said, "Because he was great from the beginning even though people didn't think that."
"I think Vex was very misunderstood as well," Bailey reesponded, "Because a lot of fans saw her as just a greedy beach. She wasn't."
In case you don't already know, reader - Marisha Ray just happens to play Keyleth, Sam Riegel just happens to play Scanlan Shorthalt, and Laura Bailey just happens to play Vex'ahlia, so I don't know that these answers can be considered completely without bias. However, before they switched topics, the cast did agree on one potential contender apart from their own characters.
"The most misunderstood character in all of Critical Role though is Spurt," Riegel declared, referencing D&D pioneer Chris Perkin's kobold inventor from Campaign 2 (and possible Mighty Nein cameo).
"He didn't have enough time to get his point of view across," agreed O'Brien, "He got it all over us, but we didn't have time to really..."
O'Brien kind of trailed off after his take. And, uh, I think I'm OK with that.
With two animated series on Prime Video, Campaign 4 in full swing, and so much more Exandrian lore to come, Critical Role is showing no signs of slowing down. That's why the adventuring party at Popverse are here to bring you everything we can from those nerdy-ass voice actors & Bo., including:
