Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic rises from the ashes of the canceled Knights of the Old Republic remake

The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake may be dead, but another game from KOTOR director Casey Hudson has risen from the ashes called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

Announced through an atmospheric teaser at the 2025 Game Awards, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic emphasizes the creative pedigree that it comes from. Hudson is known for directing the Mass Effect trilogy in addition to Knights of the Old Republic. And if there's anyone who can make an RPG set in a galaxy far, far away, it's him. Take a look at the teaser below.

For context, Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most iconic RPGs of all time, and it introduced the character of Darth Revan into Star Wars Legends continuity (which is separate from the main Star Wars canon set by the movies and post-2014 TV shows). Part of what made KOTOR so memorable was the amount of worldbuilding it brought to a previously unexplored part of Star Wars history, the Old Republic, set four thousand years before the Skywalker Saga.

In the game, the player built their own character who was recovering from amnesia, and as the story progresses, they learn more and more about recent incidents involving a Sith lord named Darth Revan. In one of the greatest plot twists in gaming history - spoiler alert - it turns out that you, or your character at least, are actually Darth Revan. Your character underwent a mind wipe of sorts, hence your amnesia. More than twenty years later, Knights of the Old Republic still slaps.

I'm an Old Republic man (why does that sound vaguely threatening?), so the fact that Hudson is back on board as a director on an Old Republic game is all I needed to keep living, honestly. There's no word yet on when we can expect Fate of the Old Republic to hit shelves, but I'm okay with that. You can't rush richness.
