Among the big news that came from the Sony State of Play last night was the confirmation of the long-rumored remake of the original God of War trilogy. The show gave us a quick teaser confirming the project was in development before the original voice of Kratos, TC Carson, appeared to give some details on the game. We didn’t see any footage, but it is clear that, if any game series needs a remake, it is the God of War Spartan Trilogy.
TC Carson was the voice of Kratos in the original God of War games before being replaced by Christopher Judge for 2018’s God of War sequel, which shifted the series focus from Greek to Norse mythology. While the newer games have brought a whole new audience to the series, fans still have a lot of nostalgia for the original God of War trilogy, which was highly praised for its action and epic scope. However, fans seem to have forgotten just how rough those early games can be to play by today’s standards.
The thing that gets us so excited for this new God of War Remake announced at yesterday’s Sony State of Play is that this is a game series where the story and characters are still interesting, but the gameplay has aged like fine milk. Even the recent remasters are rough to play once you’ve spent time playing more modern action games. The Quick Time Events that were so revolutionary in 2005 don’t feel nearly as smooth or interesting by today’s standards, and the actual fighting feels egregiously hack-and-slash even when compared to other games in the genre. Gaming has come a long way since 2005, and it is exciting to see what a full remake of the God of War Spartan Trilogy feels like when it finally comes out.
That is the big question, of course. As Kratos voice actor TC Carson said during the State of Play presentation, the God of War Trilogy Remake is still in very early development, so we’ll likely have to wait a few years to play it.
