Metroid Prime 4: Beyond looks set to rewrite the franchise's lore, and give Samus a new destiny

Why is Samus the 'Chosen One' and what does it have to do with her new telekinetic powers? All will be revealed in the new Metroid game, coming later this year

We might not know just when in 2025 to expect the Metroid Prime 4: Beyond yet, but a new trailer for the game during today’s Nintendo Direct livestream offered a host of new information for the much-anticipated sequel nonetheless — including new abilities for protagonist Samus Aran.

The new game will take place on a planet called Viewros, where Samus “finds a verdant jungle with a colossal tree at its center,” according to the trailer’s narration. “In order to survive and escape this planet that she was unexpectedly transported to, Samus must scan stone figures and other relics to carve a path forward.” (This is accompanied by a shot of her literally shooting through a cave wall, so let’s just say that “carve a path” is an imprecise art.)

Her mission will be complicated by “abhorrent creatures” waiting to attack, but it’s not all bad news; she’ll gain new psychic abilities as a result of being on the planet, including telekinesis that opens doors and, interestingly, allow for the player to control the trajectory of shots fired in battle. “But why were these powers bestowed upon Samus… and what will be her fate after being summoned to Viewros?” the narrator asks, before a clip was revealed of a mysterious figure describing her as “Chosen One.” Is there more to Samus than has ever been hinted before? Well, the game is called ‘Beyond,’ after all…!

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond remains undated, but the trailer during Nintendo Direct offered a ‘Coming 2025’ tag.
