Few video game creators have been as celebrated as Hideo Kojima. His Metal Gear Solid series has become iconic for bending the rules of gaming and storytelling and – occasionally – defying logic along the way. So, what does David Hayter, who has been the voice of Solid Snake since the very first Metal Gear Solid game, think of working with the legendary video game developer? He’ll let us know when he gets the chance to.

During the Metal Gear Solid cast panel at New York Comic Con 2025, David Hayter and the rest of the cast were asked what it was like to work with Hideo Kojima, one of the most legendary people working in the gaming industry today. “Well, I have to say,” David Hayter said. “I get asked this question, we all get asked this question a lot, and what is it like working with Hideo Kojima? We have no idea.”

The entire panel burst into laughter while Christopher Randolph, the voice of Otacon in Metal Gear Solid, admitted. “That’s true. That’s absolutely true.”

“None of us ever worked with Hideo Kojima,” Hayter explained. “Yeah, no, he works on the Japanese game and then, you know, it gets finished, or it gets halfway finished, and it gets sent to us. And then it’s Khris Zimmerman Salter who directed every single English language version, and working with her was a gift and a delight. She was just so brilliant and so dialled in, and she would know the story and she would know what’s going on and be able to guide us and tell us, help shape our characters. So yeah, Mr. Kojima is a genius, no question. His games are astounding. I’ve met him two or three times. Probably passed eight words with him in my life, so I don’t know.”
