We knew the fallout from Epic’s lawsuit against Apple would be coming, but we didn’t think it would be coming this quickly. After a court ruled that Apple couldn’t stop games on the App Store from using third-party companies for in-game purchases, Marvel Snap has become one of the first games to do exactly that. Using Xsolla’s Web Shop, which handles many of the in-app purchases for platforms like Twitch, they’ve built their own independent webshop.
This is a story that might require a little background. For the past several years, Epic Games, makers of Fortnite, have been locked in a lawsuit with Apple over the company’s restriction on the use of third-party stores for games in the App Store. The restriction means that games have to use the App Store for all purchases, which means Apple gets a sizable cut. After a court ruled that the practice was illegal, Apple has (slowly) been walking it back. This means allowing Fortnite back in the App Store and allowing games like Marvel Snap to set up their own web shops.
Marvel Snap developer Second Dinner announced the new web store – and a brand-new code for Marvel Snap. Players can use the code WEBLAUNCH to earn unlock in-game rewards.
This isn’t likely to be the last we hear about games turning away from the App Store’s high fees by creating their own in-game store. The Epic vs Apple ruling has opened the floodgates and we expect others to follow in Marvel Snap and Fortnite’s footsteps.
