How Spider-Man's New York City is different than the TMNT's NYC, according to Magic: The Gathering

Everyone's favorite Heroes in a Half-Shell turn 40 years old in 2024, and the Turtles are arguably bigger than ever, thanks to the hit Last Ronin comic book series, and a hit movie in 2023's Mutant Mayhem. If you want more, we're here with a watch guide, the chance to see co-creator Kevin Eastman tell all, information about their summer 2024 comic book relaunch, and... well, more! Cowabunga, dudes.

New York, New York: a city so nice they named it twice. Listen, I know I'm biased because I'm from New York, but part of what makes it such an enduring setting in pop culture is its multitude of vibes. The New York in American Psycho is totally different from the New York in Do the Right Thing, for instance. Or, for the sake of our conversation here, the New York of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles versus Marvel's Spider-Man.

Magic: The Gathering came out with a New York-based set, Marvel's Spider-Man, in September 2025, and here we are in early 2026, gearing up for the upcoming Magic: The Gathering x Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set's release this March. A question about returning to New York as a setting came up at a press event for the TMNT set.

"We knew going in that going back to New York right after Spider-Man, people were going to wonder about that," narrative designer Crystal Frasier began. "So we spent a lot of time figuring out: How does New York feel for Spider-Man versus Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?"

"I lived in New York City for a while, except I lived in the scummiest parts of New York City that you'd never see in media outside of, like, the 1970s. Despite that unflattering description, it's a place that I adore deeply, and miss, and loved so much at the time, and even now. So we came up with this idea of the New York you visit versus the New York you are from, or the New York you live in. So... our superhero sets in general are very iconic. They're very beautiful. They are inspiring, and then our TMNT set is, the New York is very homey and very lived in. All the spaces you have are repurposed," Frasier concluded.

You'll be able to see for yourself the differences between the New York of TMNT and Marvel's Spider-Man when Magic: The Gathering x Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles drops on March 6.
