It's a new day for the Commander format in Magic: The Gathering. With the upcoming set, Edge of Eternities, Wizards of the Coast is unveiling changes for Commander, alongside a new type of artifact with Spacecrafts.
As the Magic: The Gathering website explains, Edge of Eternities is a space-themed set. And, if you're going to move around outer space, then you're going to need some wheels. Or a ship at least. This led to the creation of Spacecrafts, an artifact type that has a multitude of different uses in Edge of Eternities.
One of the biggest ways that Edge of Eternities is shaking up Magic: The Gathering is with changes affecting the Commander format. You can now use Spacecraft artifacts to lead your own Commander deck with Edge of Eternities. This makes total sense when you think about it, because you can think of the rest of the cards in your Commander deck as the "crew" aboard the ship. And this mechanic doesn't only apply to cards from Edge of Eternities. The MTG website notes that you can use "any legendary card with a printed power and toughness" as your commander. So that leaves the door open to using any Vehicle artifact, and the like.
In addition, the other form of Commander that Edge of Eternities is ushering in is Commander Box League. Again, the MTG website details that Commander Box League works by buying a Play Booster box and then building a 60 card Commander deck out of those cards. Buy-a-box promo cards are also eligible to be used in these decks. It makes sense that WotC would create a new artifact type that you can then use as a Commander at the same time that the company is unveiling Commander Box League. With Commander Box League, you'll be able to try out Spacecrafts as your Commander in one go.
Edge of Eternities will be released on August 1, 2025.
