Wizards of the Coast printed more copies of Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy than any other MTG set in history - and they now realize it wasn't enough

Wizards of the Coast know that the people want their Sephiroth. Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy crossover already became the best selling Magic set in history before it even came out. And as you might imagine, the set has been difficult for average Magic and Final Fantasy fans alike to get ahold of.
It's a problem that a Magic fan attending Magic: The Gathering's Blogatog Live panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, featuring game designer Mark Rosewater, brought up during the Q&A session. Rosewater's response was illuminating:
"We printed more Final Fantasy, more product than we've ever printed by a magnitude... We printed more of Final Fantasy than had been sold for the entirety of Lord of the Rings, which was the previous record holder. It's not that we're not printing a lot. We're printing a huge amount. The problem we ran into is, even with that, we just didn't meet the demand."
So there you have it, folks. According to Rosewater, Wizards of the Coast didn't plan to create a scarcity of Final Fantasy. It was the sheer amount of interest in the Final Fantasy set, from so many people, that made it difficult for the company to keep up with the demand. Rosewater assured fans at the panel that Wizards of the Coast is going to continue printing play boosters for Final Fantasy for a while. So hopefully, fans who haven't gotten their hands on the set will be able to sometime soon.
Now let's see how Magic: The Gathering's upcoming crossover with Marvel's Spider-Man will go.
