It just feels right to play Magic: The Gathering around Halloween, but maybe that's just the Duskmourn, Midnight Hunt, and Crimson Vow lover in me. Any opportunity for Magic: The Gathering to get gothic and/or spooky, I take it. With that in mind, the upcoming Villainous Halloween event for Commander is the perfect way to bid adieu to spooky season this fall.
Wizards Play Network explains that A Villainous Halloween will take place starting October 31. A Villainous Halloween remixes players' standard Commander event by having them select a card from their own Commander deck to secretly designate as a "villain card" at the start of play. This card must be in accordance with a "classic villain from Magic’s history with its own alternate win condition."
As the game progresses, players must "work toward their secret objective," and once they accomplish the win condition of their villain card, they reveal it to the other players in their pod. Now, this is when the stakes get even higher - because after a player has revealed their villain card, the other players in the pod will lose the game at the end of their turn unless they can "stop the villain in time."
Whether or not they win, players can potentially receive a pack of event materials to take home with them at the end of the night, according to participating store policies. Each pack supports four players.
A Villainous Halloween runs October 31 through November 2, dependent on your local store's play schedule.
