Baldur's Gate 3 cast didn't realize how big the game really was until fans let them know at conventions, says Neil Newbon

Nothing could prepare the Baldur’s Gate 3 cast and Larian Studios for the reaction to the critically acclaimed game

When Baldur’s Gate 3 was released, it became the best-selling game on Steam and GOG. It sold more than 2.5 million copies, and that was just in it’s early access phase.

In other words, people really like this game.

The team behind Baldur’s Gate 3 knew they were making something great, but they had no idea how successful it would become.  “I think all of us got a sense it was going to be a great game when we were making it,” Astarion actor Neil Newbon said during the Rolling the Dice: The Cast of Baldur’s Gate 3 panel at C2E2 2025.

“I don’t think any of us knew, including Larian, didn’t know how big this thing was going to go. When it was launched, all of us were sort of away doing our stuff. We all got a sense of, oh my god, this game is really really good.”

Before long, fan interactions gave them a sense of just how big the game’s impact was. “I think gradually bit by bit, we’ve all experienced, including the people at Larian as well, the community coming forward and telling us how much it meant to them. I think at that point when people started doing that, our first convention was MCM London, we realized, wow, this has touched people in a way that we did not predict, and we did not know.”

“In terms of games, it’s not unique necessarily, but it was definitely a standout experience. I personally think it was one of the best games ever made, for all of those reasons. Gameplay, but also narrative, and also where the community comes together.”
