Neither Magic: The Gathering or D&D will ever use AI art, assures Hasbro CEO

Chris Cocks, Hasbro CEO, has said that AI is a "garbage in, garbage out" process that doesn't belong in Magic: The Gathering or D&D.

It feels like every week we’re getting another announcement about a company that believes that they simply have to jump onto the AI bandwagon. If it isn’t massive organizations like Sony trying to convince us that we want an Aloy to stare vacantly at us from our PS5, then film studios like Lucasfilm try to showcase their (surprisingly bland) use of AI-generated animals. However, it seems that D&D and Magic: The Gathering won’t be subject to AI slop, according to Hasbro’s CEO.

Chris Cocks isn’t immune to the allure of AI. He has admitted in the past to using gen-AI content in his home D&D game. However, he doesn’t see it as a viable means of replacing the artists that are at the heart of two of Hasbro’s biggest properties. As Hasbro’s CEO, Cocks has assured players that there won’t be any AI content in either D&D or Magic: The Gathering. “There are some brands that the audience, the creators, just don’t want it,” he said in an appearance on a podcast. “So we don’t even have it in our pipelines for our video games or for Magic: The Gathering or D&D.”

According to Cocks, generative AI has become a poisoned process. He says that it is “a bit of ‘garbage in, garbage out’” before adding that “it’s humans who inspire the good ideas and follow through on them.”

Both D&D and Magic: The Gathering are known for their impressive artwork, which can be half the reason fans buy books or cards, along with the stories that they inspire us to tell. Assuring fans that they won’t stoop to using AI art is honestly a smart move by the CEO of Hasbro.
