Master Chief voice actor Steve Downes, the former DJ who voices one of the most iconic video game characters in history, records personalized messages for fans on Cameo. He makes videos for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, bachelor parties, retirements, and other special occasions. One request keeps coming up. Several girlfriends have hired Downes to break up with their Halo-loving boyfriends in the voice of Master Chief to soften the blow.
"I've been asked to perform wedding ceremonies, birthdays, and inspirational messages all the time," Downes says at Fan Expo Chicago. "Cameo, if you don't know, is also based in Chicago. People can ask you to wish somebody happy birthday, happy anniversary, works of encouragement, graduation for college or whatever. Occasionally, we get the ones who want you to break up with their boyfriends and want Master Chief to do it. And I do it."
The line he often delivers to end things plays off Master Chief's last words in Halo 2: "Finishing the fight," which inspired the "Finish the Fight" tagline for Halo 3.
"Your fight is finished," he says.
He has not been asked to itemize all the reasons why someone is being broken up with, but said it's hard to break the news.
"It's not pretty," he says.
