Fortnite is back on the US Apple App Store after nearly 5 years, following a court ruling in favor of publisher Epic Games

Apple and Epic Games have been locked in an antitrust battle stemming from Apple's high fees for in-app purchases and restrictions on third-party apps in Fortnite.

With millions of users every day, Fortnite remains one of the most popular games on the planet. However, if you wanted to play it on an iPhone or iPad, you’ve been out of luck since 2020 when Epic Games filed an antitrust suit against Apple. Now, after nearly five years, Fortnite is finally back in the Apple App Store, though only if you have a direct link to the game.

The reinstatement of Fortnite on the iOS App Store comes after a California court ruled that Apple had willfully violated a court order in its suit against Epic Games. The two companies have been locked in a legal battle for nearly five years over Apple’s practice of taking up to 30% of all in-app purchases and restricting any third-party apps from being used to make said purchases, effectively giving Apple an unfair advantage in the marketplace.

Fortnite had been removed from the App Store in August 2020 after Epic Games refused to comply with those rules. Yesterday marked a major breakthrough in the legal battle between the two massive companies as Epic Games announced that, “Fortnite is BACK on the App Store in the U.S. on iPhones and iPads… and on the Epic Games Store and AltStore in the E.U.!”

The catch is that you can’t actually search for Fortnite on the App Store yet for reasons that are probably both incredibly petty and unreasonably technical. You can still download the game if you visit the link provided in the above social media post, but searching for Fortnite does not give any results. That is expected to change soon but was not the case at the time of writing this article.

This isn't exactly the end of Fortnite's legal troubles. In addition to further rulings in the Apple case, they are being targeted by SAG-AFTRA over the use of AI to recreate Darth Vader's voice in their Star Wars crossover. Because where there is this money on the line, you need to have an army of lawyers on standby.

You don't need to beat the game to prepare for the next one—here are all the major new and upcoming games coming our way.
