Tales from Woodcreek creators want a bigger, bolder season 2... if the show can secure a budget for it

Dungeon Dudes Kelly McLaughlin and Monty Martin would love to team up with Deborah Ann Woll for another adventure in Woodcreek, but even a high Charisma modifier won't change real-world production expenses

As of this writing, we are halfway through Tales from Woodcreek - the part-D&D liveplay, part-reality show, part-escape room GM'd by Deborah Ann Woll and streaming on The Dungeon Dudes YouTube channel. And honestly? That's kind of a bummer. Yes, we're grateful to see the liveplay medium evolving in real time, and any cast that includes Iman Vellani and Wil Wheaton is a good one - but only eight episodes? C'mon, folks, that's just not enough!

So naturally, when I got the chance to chat with The Dungeon Dudes themselves - Monty Martin and Kelly McLaughlin, in case you weren't aware - I had to ask about the possibility of a season 2. And before I bring the mood down a bit - the good news is that the Dudes are certainly at least talking about doing one.

"We're really taking in all the positivity and the excitement from the community," Martin told me over PAX Unplugged 2025, "And the voices are very loud of like, 'Why is there only eight episodes of this? What do you mean, there's only eight?' We love to hear people say how much Tales from Woodcreek has captured them and they've never watched actual plays before. So the desire and interest to explore a future project of this kind is really strong."

And now for the bad news.

"It's a big undertaking," Martin continued, "The big question now is: How do we how do we do this again? Our producer, Ed Gass-Donnelly, really was the person who brought this together, especially on the financial front, because this was a pretty costly project to make. That's the biggest barrier to making another project like it again. We're very grateful that the project was funded through Ontario Creates grants, and so there's kind of another round of that to go through. We also might look at some crowd funding options - all these things are very early-stage conversations about what could we do [...] that's the groundwork we're able to talk about right now."

"I can pretty safely say that everybody," McLaughlin hopped in, "The Dungeon Dudes, Deb [Ann Woll], Ed [Gass-Donnelly], and Anjali [Bhimani, series star] are excited at the idea of a season 2. whether or not we can do it is a lot of what Monty is saying. It's up to to how successful it ends up being, how popular it is. Which is looking great - the audience is really having a great time with this show."

"It's interesting when you look at Tales from Woodcreek," the Drakkenheim roleplayer expanded, "From the perspective of film and television, it's an extremely low budget show. But from the perspective of two YouTubers, this is the biggest budget we've ever gotten [...] And we know that, if we do a season 2, we want to do something a little bit bigger."

"Yeah, we got to raise the bar again," agreed Martin, "So how do we do that? Well, we're gonna need a bigger budget. And it's about it's about what getting that looks like."

"It's a big ask," concluded McLaughlin, "But the audience loves it. We love it. We all want to do it."

It's true, Kelly. But love pays neither bills nor craft service fees. But don't worry, Popverse reader, if this does end up going to Kickstarter or the like, we'll let you know.

Tales from Woodcreek is streaming on the Dungeon Dudes YouTube channel now.
