Baldurs Gate 3 producer Larian Studios leans hard into folk horror with the most Wicker Man-coded trailer I have ever seen

We know next to nothing about Divinity - the new RPG coming from Bladur's Gate 3's Larian Studios - but we do wonder if we should watch out for any BEEEEEEEEEES

Chalk one up for the folk horror fans out there.

The next game from Baldur’s Gate 3 producers Larian Studios was certainly one of the most anticipated bits of gaming news in recent memory. And now, devotees of that specific spooky subgenre can celebrate the fact that the studio’s next offering is right up their straw-covered alley. But before we talk about which specific folk horror it’s draining from, go ahead and check out the trailer for Divinity yourself.

Larian’s official tagline for Divinity is as follows:

"The gods are silent. Rivellon bleeds. New powers stir."

And, yeah, we don’t know what that means either. Something about elf sex? What we can say for decently certain, though, is that the House of Baldur’s Gate seems to be drawing from a staple of the folk hoodie genre for this cinematic trailer: that is, The Wicker Man.

In case you don’t know, The Wicker Man is the name of both a 1973 film starring Christopher Lee and a (regularly derided) 2006 remake starring Nicholas Cage. In both films, a local cop comes to a remote village to investigate the disappearance of a girl, only to find the community involved in bizarre, pagan practices. Though the films’ plots vary in a lot of ways, both end the same - at the burning of a large humanoid structure (the titular Wicker Man) - with a human being inside.

The original Wicker Man’s influence extends across media, into films like Midsommar, TV like Yellowjackets, comics like The Autumnal, and even tabletop role-playing campaigns like The Crooked Moon. Very soon, it seems, gamers are going to see its influence in one of their most exciting fantasy RPGs, with one key difference.

While Wicker Man only ends with the bubbling fats and sizzling skin in human sacrifice, Divinity has chosen it as a starting place.

No release date for Divinity has been announced as of this writing.
