Critical Role cast members Laura Bailey and Liam O'Brien on how they're tackling "harder moments" in The Legend of Vox Machina season 4
There are some pretty harrowing events coming for Vex & Vax in the upcoming season of The Legend of Vox Machina. Bailey and O'Brien shared how they got into those as actors and, ironically, the benefits of such storytelling

We're not in the business of spoiling things here at Popverse, so we'll say it like this: there are some troubles awaiting Vex and Vax in The Legend of Vox Machina's upcoming season. You already know what some of these troubles might be if you watched Critical Role Campaign 1, the actual play series upon which the hit Prime Video show is based, but that doesn't mean you're prepared for them.
If you're Laura Bailey and Liam O'Brien, though, you kinda have to prepare for those traumas. And recently, Popverse's Trent Cannon got a window into their process.
Trent was speaking to Bailey and O'Brien (who play Vox Machina's Vex'ahlia and Vax'ildan, respectively), and asked about how the pair of on-screen twins prepared to go to such dark, emotional places in the show.
"All eight of us care about each other so much," began O'Brien, "And so it's really easy to be five feet away from Laura Bailey in our recording booth to, you know, wade into the harder moments again. When I feel like I'm gonna get my Laura Bailey ripped away from me, it upsets me. It's easy to go there. I mean, it's not easy, but it's simple to slip back into it. And once you're there, you're in it."
Imagining yourself losing a member of your chosen family would be hard for anyone, but Bailey pointed out that, as people who pretend for a living, there's a kind of catharsis in playing that out.
"There's this horrible, masochistic thing with actors," Bailey explained, "Where getting to go into those really emotional moments feels good at the same time that it feels so bad. It's a beautiful thing to get to recreate it and relive it, especially knowing that I still have Liam next to me."
We have to wonder what moments in particular Bailey's talking about, but maybe Trent can ask her about that the next time they get a chance to chat. Again, we don't deal in spoilers here.
The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 comes to Prime Video June 3.
