What the Critical Role Exandrian video game is taking from Dispatch, according to Travis Willingham

The hit game Dispatch was made with a lot of Critical Role support - and now the success of that game is informing Critical Role's first video game.

A Critical Role video game is on the way. And exciting as that concept is, there's simply not much we know about it at this point. But if we were trying to discover what it might look like, a previous game that much of the Critica Role cast worked on wouldn't be a terrible place to start. And if you're a Popverse regular, I probably don't have to tell you that the game in question is Dispatch, the superhero satire that boasted CR credits such as Matt Mercer, Laura Bailey, and more.

So naturally, when I got the chance to sit down with some of the Critical Role folks at Emerald City Comic Con 2026, one question I just had to ask was: What elements of Dispatch will carry into the Critical Role game?

And it was Phenomaman himself, Travis Willingham, that answered me.

"First of all," began the Fjord Stone voice actor, "We have to tip our hats to the folks over at AdHoc Studios. They just made an absolutely insanely fun, entertaining, wild game. They are a group of creatives like like no other, from the music to the characters to the writing to the vibes to the way they, I think, entirely reinvented a branching narrative style game."

Willingham isn't alone in thinking that, either - of the plethora of praise Dispatch is receiving, so much of it deals with how the narrative flowed.

"That was the thing that made that jumped out to me the most," Willingham admits, "[That] made me want to go make a Critical Role game like that. Obviously video game development takes a long time, so I I think what we've taken - not just on the video game side, but also in the animated series side - is that every time we add [...] cooks into the kitchen, you know, it it just adds to the project."

So what do more cooks mean for what the Critical Role game will serve? Well, according to Critical Role's Grog Strongjaw, the biggest thing is an expansion of their menu.

"It's about seeing where the stories in Exandria can go," Willingham continued, "What kind of a game can Critical Role tell; what can we offer our fan base? We start probably from a point where we're excited to make a game that we would want to play, then it's also really interesting to talk with these devs and find out what they're interested in, what about Critical Role excites them the most. [We're excited to] just be able to throw a bunch of stuff on the wall and see what sticks."

We're excited to see what sticks too, Travis.

...and much, much more. Roll initiative, player. Magic awaits.
