Critical Role’s Sam Riegel reveals why the group has never broken up (and it makes total sense)
Critical Role’s Sam Riegel compares the cast to a rock band, and reveals how they avoid the infighting most bands do

It’s rare to see a group stay together. The Beatles broke up, NSYNC broke up, and Oasis spent over a decade apart. Too much time together can make even the best of friends become bitter enemies, but that hasn’t happened to the cast of Critical Role. What makes them different? For starters, they’re not musicians like our previous examples, but Sam Riegel believes it’s because there is strength in numbers.
“[Matthew Mercer] really keeps us together,” Sam Riegel says during a Critical Role spotlight panel at MCM Comic Con 2023. “He insists on doing things together as just friends tonight, we’re not business partners, we’re just hanging out, and we try to do that as much as we can and it really helps a lot. I also think there’s strength in numbers for us. If were just a partnership or a trio, if there were a fight – I think that’s why bands break up a lot. There’s a fight and that’s it, it’s over.”
“But because there’s so many of us, like if two of us are miffed with each other, which does happen from time to time, there’s so many others who can step in and be like, ‘Let me talk to Ashley. I know she’s mad at you Sam [laughs].’ We can be there for each other and support and be in between each other. And I don’t know, we all love each other so much. It’s crazy at this point. I think we want to be together for the rest of our lives. I want a Matt-face t-shirt at his funeral.”
With two animated series on Prime Video, Campaign 4 in full swing, and so much more Exandrian lore to come, Critical Role is showing no signs of slowing down. That's why the adventuring party at Popverse are here to bring you everything we can from those nerdy-ass voice actors & Bo., including:
- How to watch Critical Role in order
- Travis Willingham on the differences between The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein
- Taliesin Jaffe on playing Mollymauk Tealeaf for Campaign 2 vs. playing him for Prime Video
- Matt Mercer's homebrew warrior class (created originally for Vin Diesel)
...and much, much more. Roll initiative, player. Magic awaits.
