How Critical Role's Sam Riegel would make a Phoenix Wright movie

"You can't handle the - OBJECTION!" Phoenix Wright fans, Critical Role mainstay (and voice of Wright himself) Sam Riegel has a movie pitch you're gonna want to hear

Critical Role fans probably know Sam Riegel as Scanlan Shorthalt, Fresh Cut Grass, or Nott the Brave (AKA Ve... oops, sorry, spoilers). But if you're more into handheld console gaming than you are TTRPG actual plays, you may recognize him as voicing a very different iconic character - the titular Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, who Riegel's been voicing since 2011 with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. We're pretty big fans of gaming's most endearing attorney ourselves, so when we got the chance to talk to Riegel about the character, we asked the question only someone who's been in his shoes could properly answer:

How would you make a Phoenix Wright movie?

"It would be a shot for shot remake of a Few Good Men," Rigel told us at Emerald City Comic Con 2026, during an exclusive interview with him,  Matt Mercer, and Travis Willingham, "Except with Phoenix Wright as Tom Cruise. And all in Japanese!"

Willingham, Riegel's Critical Roll co-star and video game voice legend himself, jumped in with the first suggestion of dialogue.

"You can't handle the - OBJECTION!"

It writes itself, folks. Somebody get Aaron Sorkin on the line.

With two animated series on Prime Video, Campaign 4 in full swing, and so much more Exandrian lore to come, Critical Role is showing no signs of slowing down. That's why the adventuring party at Popverse are here to bring you everything we can from those nerdy-ass voice actors & Bo., including:

...and much, much more. Roll initiative, player. Magic awaits.
