NYCC 2021 | From Graphic Novels to Horror Thrillers: How Different Audiobooks are Narrated
This panel explores the intricacies of transforming books into audiobooks through the art of narration. Featuring Kristen Radtke author/narrator of SEEK YOU, Grady Hendrix author of FINAL GIRL SUPPORT CLUB, and Andrea Bartz author of WE WERE NEVER HERE, the trio discusses the differences in their written words versus the audiobook form, and how they ensure the same emotionally-charged prose of suspense, loneliness, and horror come across through expert narration. SEEK YOU is a wide-ranging exploration of our inner lives and public selves. Narrated by author Kristen Radtke it digs into the ways in which we attempt to feel closer to one another and the distance that remains. Via the lenses of gender and violence technology and art Radtke ushers us through a history of loneliness and longing and shares what feels impossible to share. Kristen Radtke has established herself as a pioneer of the graphic essay. Her work has appeared in THE NEW YORK TIMES THE ATLANTIC VOGUE GQ and OXFORD AMERICAN. She is the art director of THE BELIEVER and she has contacts and fans everywhere. FINAL GIRL SUPPORT GROUP is a wickedly witty homage to the classic “final girl” trope from horror and slasher films from NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Grady Hendrix. Andrea Bartz is a Brooklyn-based journalist and author of the NEW YORK TIMES bestseller and Reese Book Club Pick WE WERE NEVER HERE about a backpacking trip with deadly consequences in this “eerie psychological thriller . . . with alluring locales, Hitchcockian tension, and possibly the best pair of female leads since Thelma and Louise” (BookPage), from the bestselling author of The Lost Night and The Herd. NYCC 2021 | STEAM Power!
STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Math) education has become the norm for curriculum across the country. Often, it starts too late. Out-of-school learning is imperative for children. It is important for them to start STEAM education at a young age in order to establish their own learning path. Who better to get them safely on that path than a bunch of superheroes? The merger of STEAM-based learning comics and cosplay is a natural fit. It opens the world of STEAM to the very young in a way that is hands-on accessible and engaging. The art of cosplay covers many of the basic tenets of STEAM curriculum. Teaching children utilizing cosplay can be a strong bridge between formal and informal learning. Together the panel will bring ideas on how to make the world of STEAM immersive educational open and alive for the very young.
