2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the “All-New, All-Different” X-Men — which is to say, the version of the team that transformed the concept from a quasi-successful comic book superteam into the pop culture phenomenon at the heart of comics, movies, cartoons, action figures, and so much more. To celebrate the half-century mark, Marvel has announced a trip down memory lane this summer that just might rewrite history in the process.

In a storyline running through five oversized issues beginning in May, writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing and a number of artists including Adam Kubert will follow Ms. Marvel as she’s pulled into the history of the X-Men by an unknown villain, finding herself at the center of some of the most beloved (and controversial) moments of the team’s history. The story will begin with May 3’s Free Comic Book Day 2025: Fantastic Four/Giant-Size X-Men #1, and then continue in the following issues:
- Giant-Size X-Men #1 by Kelly, Lanzing and Kubert. On sale May 28
- Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1 by Kelly, Lanzing, and artist TBA. On sale June
- Giant-Size Age of Apocalypse #1 by Kelly, Lanzing, and artist TBA. On sale June
- Giant-Size House of M #1 by Kelly, Lanzing, and artist TBA. On sale July
- Giant-Size X-Men #2 by Kelly, Lanzing, and artist TBA. On sale July
“No hype: every issue of Giant-Size is here to blow your mind and break your heart,” Lanzing and Kelly said in a statement about the story. “Mutantkind is the grandest, most sprawling canvas in the Marvel canon—moreover, it’s the one the Hivemind’s been arguing and geeking out about since we were teenagers at our local comic shop. Now, alongside the absolute legend Adam Kubert and three more of the best artists in the industry, we’re posed to completely wreck and reassemble the history of the X - with our favorite hero Kamala Khan front and center. It’s an honor, a joy, and a huge responsibility. Free Comic Book Day is just a taste. What comes next will be marvelous.”
Additionally, each of the Giant-Size issues will contain an additional story titled ‘Revelations’ by X-Men creators of the past that, Marvel promises, will “uncover hidden moments that will alter the X-Men’s future!” The first such story, in Giant-Size X-Men #1, comes from Al Ewing and Sara Pichelli and introduces “the X-Man that never was.”
As if the tagline of “the past isn’t set in stone. The future is up for grabs” wasn’t enough of a warning that things are about to change in X-Men comic book history — just as the franchise is about to head into the MCU, as well, notably — take a look at the promo graphic for Giant-Size below, and in particular, the description for #2…

Happy Birthday, X-Men. Hope you survive the experience.
