For Supergirl writer Tom King, self-care is his rescue dog Roxy (who's just as bad as Krypto)

DC Comics & TV writer Tom King shares how much his canine companion means to him.

During New York Comic Con 2025, legendary comics writer Tom King sat down with Popverse’s Ashley V. Robinson in the Pop Spot. It goes without saying that King is the prolific writer behind some of the most critically acclaimed cape comics of the past decade. And during his conversation with Robinson, he shared his source of self-care: his pet dog.

The topic came up when Robinson asked, “How do you take care of yourself? What is self-care for Tom King?”

“There is a self-care thing,” King promptly replied. “Her name is Roxy, she’s my dog, and she is absolutely wonderful.” King then humorously suggested she was his favorite child, beating out his three human offspring.

“In all honesty, it’s one of the greatest things I’ve ever had,” King continued. “A little rescue pup; she’s a little Pit mix. She’s a terrible, horrible dog. You can see this scar on my leg when I had to separate her because she and another dog got into a fight. But just taking her for a walk every day, sitting down and petting her every day, I couldn’t recommend highly enough. If you’re a person with a ton on your plate and a lot of anxiety and trying to get to the next thing, rescue a dog and take care of something that will love you back.”

And did Roxy inspire any of the many dog characters in King’s work? “All of them,” King said. “She literally sits next to me all day long. If you ever see me on a Zoom, there’s always a sleeping dog in the background.”
