How Swamp Thing will enter the Something is Killing the Children universe, according to James Tynion IV
Despite the DC/BOOM! Studios collaboration's absolutely brilliant title, we couldn't fathom a good reason why Swamp Thing is Killing the Children. But as James Tynion IV let us know, it's not exactly him that's doing it...

You may recall Popverse reporting the exciting news that DC's most horror-tinged hero, Swamp Thing, is going to be playing in an all new horror sandbox over at BOOM! Studios - the dark and Twisted Universe of Something is Killing the Children. Yes, Swamp Thing is Killing the Children is headed to a comic shop near you soon, but even now, SIKTC creator James Tynion IV is giving fans a window as to how Erica Slaughter and the Avatar of the Green are crossing paths.
Tynion was speaking at the Slaughterverse panel hosted by C2E2 2026 when the subject of the cross-company project came up. "I spent like two and a half years trying to convince Marie Javins to do this over at DC Comics," the Department of Truth author said of his latest work, "And then she was finally like okay we can do this we're going to make this happen. so this is a story that I've had very clearly in my head for a long time."
Now here's where things get really interesting: a few months after the comic's announcement, we finally learned why DC's Swamp Thing, who usually finds himself on the side of the angels, would earn such a heinous (though extremely clever) title. Well as it turns out, the Swamp Thing of the upcoming series, drawn by original SIKTC artist Werther Dell’Edera, isn't exactly the one we know and love.
"The core of the story is set in the world of Something is Killing the Children," Tynion continued, "Where you have two brothers. There is an older brother who loves horror comics and has a giant poster of Swamp Thing on the wall in his room. Then you have a younger brother who loves superhero comics, but he's terrified of his older brother's horror comics. That fear manifests into the shape of something very familiar in those words, and that is where Erica Slaughter enters the scene."
But don't despair, Swamp Thing fans, there will be more to this Treelike Tulpa than just an image conjured from the posters on a child's bedroom.
"There are definitely more metatextual connections than that," Tynion concluded, "I will say: an essence of the true Alec Holland will make an appearance in this book. It'll be a standalone story that hopefully is one that you will all pick up, because it's a deeply personal one."
Color us intrigued, James.
Swamp Thing is Killing the Children, written by James Tynion IV and drawn by Werther Dell’Edera, is currently without a release date. We'll let you know as soon as we do, reader.
