Star Wars: A New Hope - The Manga gets a Kickstarter and reminds us that this is probably the best Star Wars comic book of all time
Less than a day after it launched, the Kickstarter campaign has already brought in more than triple its initial goal

- Critical Role star Sam Riegel didn't know FCG's fate before the moment happened - but he did know it was "a good way to go"

And everything happening this week for Future Fest!
Star Wars has a long history in the comic book industry, but it wasn’t any of the (many, many) comic book stories that always hit hardest for me. No, that honor belongs to Hisao Tamaki’s iconic Star Wars: A New Hope – The Manga, which was first published back in 1998. Now, Lucasfilm and Dark Horse have launched a Kickstarter for an art book collecting the storyboards that Tamaki worked on.
At the time of writing, the Kickstarter campaign for The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope – The Manga has already nearly tripled its initial goal of $50,000, but it is an official Star Wars product (and the first official Star Wars product on Kickstarter), so that isn’t necessarily a shock to us. And while it would be easy to be cynical about it, we’re honestly just excited that more people are getting to see the incredible work that Hisao Tamaki did on this adaptation.
For the most part, Star Wars: A New Hope: The Manga is a straight adaptation of the plot of the film with a few minor changes here and there, but what has always been striking about it is the fluid motion in the art. Tamaki captured the youthful energy of the characters (Luke and Leia are both teenagers in A New Hope, after all) and also manages to give everything powerful 1980s manga vibes despite it being produced in the late 90s. I've said before that Star Wars and anime are the perfect pairing, so this is a really cool product to see going into production.
According to the Kickstarter page, The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope – The Manga is expected to ship to backers in May 2026, but that release date is fluid until later in production.
