Just when you thought it was safe to go web-slinging around New York City, Marvel has announced something called The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man — a 10-issue comic book storyline launching this fall. Because, you know, one death wouldn’t be enough.

To be fair, Marvel has killed Spider-Man before — well, a Spider-Man — in a 2011 storyline that ultimately gave the world Miles Morales, so maybe this time around they’re hoping for eight different breakout characters to emerge from this murder spree. It could be just like what happened to Superman in the 1990s, only more so.

Of course, the title might have multiple different meanings: is Spider-Man dying eight different times? Are eight different Spider-Men from across the multiverse dying? Or is the comic taking a leaf from the pages of a 1980s Batman storyline and killing off other people dressed as Spider-Man?

Marvel isn’t saying just yet. Instead, it’s released a graphic with the names of the creators attached to the storyline, the title, and eight tombstones, all numbered in an appropriately scratchy manner. The graphic was accompanied by the following text: “Following Zeb Wells’ landmark run, writer Joe Kelly and Justina Ireland alongside artists Ed McGuinness and Gleb Melnikov bring you a new Spidey epic titled THE 8 DEATHS OF SPIDER-MAN. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more information on this 10-issue arc launching this fall!”

The mention of the conclusion of Zeb Wells’ run would suggest this storyline will appear in the ongoing Amazing Spider-Man comic book series, but nothing else in the announcement would appear to confirm that. The final run of issues by Wells begins with September’s Amazing Spider-Man #58, but it’s not been officially announced when his final issue will be.
