Now hiring: Sorcerer Supreme. Some magic experience needed.
Marvel Comics has announced that the upcoming One World Under Doom #9 will reveal that the company's current Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom, will be giving up the role - one he's had for about a year, taking it from the most well-known Sorcerer Supreme in Doctor Strange. And just after Mavel announced that during Marvel's Next Big Thing panel just now at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2025, Marvel teasedthe coming of a replacement with a teaser image labeled 'Long Live the Sorcerer Supreme,' illustrated by Devmalya Pramanik (Moon Knight) - with a promise of some sort of project attached to this coming out in December 2025.
As the speculation begins, the best place to look is back to Doctor Strange. He's currently starring in a miniseries with him attempting to become the Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard, but there is also a celebratory one-off anthology Doctor Strange #450 coming September 3 now looks to also be setting the table for whatever comes next. In fact, one of its writers, Derek Landry (who is also writer of Doctor Strange of Asgard), said something back in May about Doctor Strange #450 that now seems a portent for Sorcerer Supreme.
“For 62 years, Stephen Strange had guided readers through the magical realms of Marvel, steering us from one mind-bending horror to the next," says Landry. "As a writer, to be given the chance to turn the tables, to be a part of this milestone issue and, within it, to steer the good doctor towards the dark adventures that await him, is a thrill beyond measure."
Landry is writing the current Doctor Strange of Asgard miniseries, but whatever the Sorcerer Supreme teaser appears to be teasing seems... bigger.
"In Doctor Strange #450, Landry will continue to explore this fantastical new direction for Strange and reveals a glimpse at what comes next!," reads a Marvel advertisement.
Stay tuned for "what comes next!" here at Popverse.
