After Olympic fears and relocation rumors, San Diego Comic-Con is staying in the city through 2030
San Diego Comic-Con signs deal to remain in San Diego through 2030.

After months of private negotiations (and some public negotiations and veiled threats), the city of San Diego has reached a deal with the non-profit San Diego Comic-Con to keep its flagship event in the city through the year 2030.
"I am thrilled to announce we have reached an agreement to keep Comic-Con in San Diego through 2030," announced San Diego mayor Todd Gloria in a public event in the lobby of the San Diego Convention Center on July 22. "That is, of course, fantastic news for fans, for local businesses, for thousands of people who work in our tourism and hospitality industries who support this event, and anyone who believes Comic-Con belongs in the city where it all began."

The long-term future of San Diego Comic-Con has been something of an open question for years at this point; since 2019, when Comic-Con International signed a five-year contract with the city of San Diego, extensions to keep Comic-Con in the city have been notably short-term; in July 2024, it extended its contract one year to include the 2025 show, and in January 2025, it signed a two-year extension to include the 2026 and 2027 shows. Beyond that, however, other factors might end up pushing the show elsewhere… or temporarily closing it down altogether.
“There are real, practical things that we have to consider, and those are anything from possibly having to move to a location that may not be impacted by the events in LA, like you said, the potential of sitting out the year, [or] any number of things,” Comic-Con International chief communications and strategy officer David Glanzer said during a SDCC event. "The real determining factor, I think, is the impact the decision may have on unions and also the financial impact we will take.”
Chief among those concerns is the 2028 Olympics, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles concurrent to SDCC 2028. Although the two cities are 120 miles apart, the number of venues needed will lead to some of the LA Olympics being held in San Diego, including some of the Olympic Football (Soccer) matches at the Snapdragon Stadium, which is less than 10 miles northwest of the convention center.
Dates for SDCC 2027 have been announced, and this date would imply there will be dates for SDCC 2028, SDCC 2029, and SDCC 2030... but its possible those could be outside the normal late July window to make room for the 135,000+ fans who come to the annual event.
Here's a list of all the major upcoming comic cons through 2027 and around the world.
