DC is going to retell Batman's history - beginning with his first villain, Dr. Death - in special by Matt Fraction & Becky Cloonan

Matt Fraction and Becky Cloonan are collaborating on a special Batman project pitting the Dark Knight against Dr. Death one more time - and retelling the character's entire history in the process.

It’s clear from the already-released first issue that Matt Fraction’s new Batman comic book series with artist Jorge Jimenez is set to define the present and future of DC’s Dark Knight, but he’s going even bigger than that, with a new project telling the entire history of the character from start to… whatever’s next.

“I'm writing a story that Becky [Cloonan]'s gonna draw. I'm gonna do a like, an annual or special. I don't know what it's gonna be yet. I don't know if I'm supposed to say it, but I'm saying it anyway,” Fraction reveals at the end of the Saturday morning DC Comics: Batman with Matt Fraction and Friends panel at Rose City Comic Con 2025. “Part of it is because I love Becky, and I want to write for Becky, and it's a story that's gonna be Batman throughout his history. So she's gonna get to do not just Becky's Batman, but Becky's Batman as he started, and where he went, and all these different things.”

Oh, do you want to know more about the story? Don’t worry, Fraction was willing to share: “It's going to be Batman fighting Dr. Death, who was the first super villain he ever fought, and it's going to be about their relationship throughout the years — and Dr. Death suggesting to him, ‘you know, all of this is our fault, right?’”

Fraction looked to panel moderator and Batman group editor Rob Levin after revealing everything: “Is it okay that I said that?”

Cloonan, who was also on the panel, joked, “This is first time I’m hearing about this.”

“That called media training,” Levin said. “She’s very good.”

Batman #1 is available now.
