Raina Telgemeier and Tri Vuong value the medium of comics, but are intrigued by other areas for adaptations.

It seems almost everyday you hear reports that another comic or graphic novel is in the process of being adapted into a film or television show. As exciting it would be to see your creations alive in a different medium, there are some who are content with what they have already made.

When asked at the ALA Annual Conference about what medium she would like to see her graphic novels spun out into, Raina Telgemeier said, “It would be cool, but I don’t know if it’s necessary. I don’t feel like I’ve ever been somebody who had aspirations of, I’m going to write this story and then maybe someday someone will translate it into a different medium. I am the medium. I made the medium that I care about the most.”

During his turn, Tri Vuong echoed the sentiment. “The comic should be the main thing and then it’d be cool to see interpretations of that, but like Tin Tin, we can always come back to the comics because that is where the truest form is.”

Both Telgemeier and Vuong also agreed on the intriguing potential of video game adaptations. Maybe neither considered the option, but when mentioned, it “sparked” Telgemeier’s imagination. Similarly, something “clicked” inside Vuong because he never imagined Everyday Hero Machine Boy as a video game. Interestingly, the graphic novel was inspired by classic video game instruction manuals.

Could we receive a point and click adventure set in one of Raina’s books? Some fun side scrolling action with Everyday Hero Machine Boy? Maybe someday.
