In 1991 Hugo Award winning author Timothy Zahn wrote the novel Heir to the Empire, which resulted in a creative and cultural renaissance for Star Wars. Perhaps that’s why Marvel chose Zahn to revive the character Star-Lord in 1996. After all, if he was able to make Star Wars a bestseller, he could probably do the same thing for Star-Lord. 

In 1996 Timothy Zahn wrote Starlord (note the lack of a hyphen), a three issue mini-series that introduced a new version of the character. Sinjin Quarrel was an adventurer who adopted the identity of Starlord after the disappearance of Peter Quill. Perhaps Marvel was anticipating demand for more adventures, because they commissioned a sequel from Zahn. However, the further adventures of Sinjin Quarrel have never been published. 

During a panel at Dragon Con, Zahn spoke about his lost Star-Lord story. “I’ve enjoyed the times I’ve gotten to do some comics. I did a three-part Star-Lord story. I also did a second three-part story which they bought and paid for and never published. It’s sitting in somebody’s drawer at Marvel at the moment. I don’t know if it will ever see the light of day. Nothing has ever come of that.”

Aside from a cameo appearance in Avengers #2 (2010), Sinjin Quarrel hasn’t been seen again. Peter Quill is currently Star-Lord as far as Marvel is concerned, so it’s doubtful that Zahn’s second mini-series will ever see the light of day. However, maybe there’s hope of it being printed in an omnibus or as a backup story. After all, when you have a story by a Hugo Award winning author, you don’t leave it in a drawer.
