Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld hid New Mutants #100 twist because he didn’t trust Marvel not to steal it (and his credit)

Rob Liefeld isn’t a fan of creator retreats. The legendary writer and artist sees the value in them, but he’s also seen multiple creators have their ideas torpedoed or stolen. Liefeld, who is famous for co-creating Deadpool and Cable, believes creators should keep their plans close to the vest....even from their editors.
“One guy told me, ‘They took my idea right in front of me and gave it to another guy right in front of me and said, 'Great idea, he’s better equipped.’ I’m like, I’d be out of the room. I couldn’t take it,” Liefeld says during an episode of his Robservations with Rob Liefeld podcast.
For this reason, Liefeld kept the identity of Stryfe a secret. The final page of New Mutants #100 shocked readers as they learned that Stryfe was a variant of Cable. According to Liefeld, he didn’t even tell X-Men editor Bob Harras.
“As a creator, you don’t want to play all your hands. One of the best kinds of accolades I’ve ever received was from Geoff Johns and Robert Kirkman, almost within the same four weeks. They both, upon interacting with them, said, ‘Rob, New Mutants #100, the last page, when Stryfe takes off his helmet and reveals he’s a Cable version or whatever, he looks exactly like him, I dropped the comic. I was like, 'What’s going on here?’”
“When I brought those pages in, Bob Harras said, ‘Why didn’t you tell us? I had no idea you were going in this direction?’ I said, ‘I don’t trust any of you guys.’ We had to hold our secrets, our reveals. I’m just not a fan of that executive retreat. I get it. I get why they do them, I guess. But look how much good stuff comes from, ‘Hey, I got an idea. Let me pop it your way. I got a green light, boom.’ I mean, that’s how we kind of got things done.”
