Marvel wants to make sure their new Avengers team appeals to MCU fans

Marvel’s new Avengers series is here to satisfy both MCU fans and loyal comic book readers

There is a new Avengers team on the horizon - both in terms of the lineup of heroes as well as the creative team behind the Marvel Comics series.

Writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Marco Checchetto will reunite to take on Earth's Mightiest Heroes, a move that will undoubtedly drum up a lot of excitement for Marvel readers who are still riding the highs of their acclaimed run on Daredevil (hello!). But this Avengers lineup is worth taking a closer look at, too, because it appeals not just to longtime Marvel Comics fans, but to more casual fans who chiefly watch the MCU. Let's take a look at who's on the team.

We've got Spider-Man, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Captain Marvel - all of whom have headlined (or co-headlined) their own Marvel Studios project. Spider-Man is set to light up the box office this summer with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Wolverine clawed his way to the top of the box office a couple of summers ago with Deadpool and Wolverine, fans are buzzing after the return of Mike Colter's Luke Cage in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, and while The Marvels was a box office misfire, the 2019 Captain Marvel film grossed over a billion dollars.

In other words, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Wolverine specifically are hot characters right now for MCU fans, especially given that Marvel Studios is developing an X-Men film. In other words, this team represents the present and future of the MCU, making it a surefire win for MCU fans who are looking to jump into reading Marvel Comics.

Looking beyond the appeal to MCU fans, Zdarsky and Checchetto being the creative team behind Marvel's flagship Avengers title will appeal to Wednesday Warriors who hit up their local comic shop each week, because their previous work together speaks for itself. Their Daredevil series (and Devil's Reign event) was fire. Checchetto was introduced to a larger audience with the success of Ultimate Spider-Man, written by Jonathan Hickman.

November's Avengers #1 was announced just days before the Avengers-centric Marvel summer crossover event Avengers: Armageddon

Earlier this year, Chip Zdarsky said he has an overall Marvel Comics plan mapped out through 2028, to include his current Captain America run, the imminent Avengers: Armageddon event, "and the thing that follows that, and the thing that follows that."

This comes eight months since the end of the previous era, led by writer Jed MacKay in a three-year run beginning back in 2023. And this also comes just in time for December's Avengers: Doomsday movie, the first Avengers movie in 7 years.

Nowadays, the connection between Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios makes some comics fans uneasy, in the wake of Marvel Comics losing its longtime publisher, Dan Buckley, and Marvel Studios producer Brad Winderbaum stepping up to oversee Marvel Comics, Television, Animation, and more. But if the Avengers announcement tells us anything, it's that perhaps Marvel Comics can satisfy both fans of the MCU and those of us surrounded by short boxes in our homes.

Avengers #1 by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto will be released November 4, 2026.
