Superman's dog will break your heart in the upcoming Krypto comic book series, but don't look for continuity clues, says editor
No-one can make sense of Krypto's complicated backstory, DC editor Paul Kaminski told fans at C2E2 2025

This isn’t just a Summer of Superman, to use DC’s term for the upcoming season — what else to call a summer that sees the Man of Steel rebooted on the big screen, accompanied by all manner of comic book projects to support the movie? It’s also a Summer of Krypto, as the fan response to the Pup of Steel’s appearance in the first trailer for the movie underscores how much the world appreciates a very, very good boy.
The problem for Krypto fans is that the Superdog keeps getting reintroduced with a different backstory over and over again. Is he the pet of Superboy in a pocket universe, or a regular dog adopted by a clone of Superman? Is he an escapee from a fake Krypton created by Brainiac, a dog that was sent in the spaceship that accompanied the baby Kal-El to Earth, or a family pet temporarily trapped in The Phantom Zone where nothing ages for decades? Across the past few decades, each of those origins have been “true” at one point or another. So… what is Krypto’s history right now?
At C2E2 2025, DC editor Paul Kaminski suggested that fans shouldn’t think about it too hard. During Saturday's DC: Celebrate Superman panel, Kaminski talked about the upcoming Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton series, saying that it made him cry and will break your heart… but it definitely won’t answer anyone’s lingering lore questions.
“Are we going to make sense of all the various origins of Krypto? I’m here to tell you, no-one can do that,” the editor joked.
As Jack Kirby put it when he was working on DC’s Superman spin-off Jimmy Olsen back in the 1970s: “Don’t ask! Just buy it!”
Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton launches June 18.
