Kodansha is setting up a manga pop-up in New York just in time for New York Comic-Con

We can't wait to finally do the Akira Slide without facing permanent injury.

Popverse was there for all four days of New York Comic Con 2024, immersing ourselves in the pop culture party full of vendors, events, and celebrities from the worlds of comics, movies, TV, gaming, and more. If you couldn't make it (or are worried you missed something) click the link for our wall-to-wall coverage of the event.

Our friends at Kodansha have a very special surprise for manga and anime fans in New York next month. With the opening of the Kodansha House pop-up, they’ll give fans of anime like Akira and Attack on Titan the chance to step into the anime. It promises to be a wild, one-of-a-kind experience for the New York anime fan.

The Kodansha House pop-up will be running Wednesdays to Sundays from 12 pm-9 pm at 45 Grand Street in SoHo and will have plenty of manga and anime merch for you to check out, but that isn’t all for you to see and do there. Throughout the month, Kodansha will be hosting events, movie nights, manga book clubs, and trivia nights, but, like any good convention fan, the thing that we’re most excited about is the photo opportunities.

Ever wanted to pull off the Akira Slide but didn’t want to risk losing half your skin to road rash? Kodansha is giving you a chance to put on Kaneda’s iconic jacket and pose against a projected background for a four-shot sequence that recreates one of the coolest moments in anime history. And if classic anime isn’t your thing, then you can step into the role of a Titan in a scale model of a walled village in Attack on Titan. Reach over the walls and buildings to snatch tiny figures made of candy to become the most adorable scourge of humanity there has ever been.

We’re also excited to meet some mangaka who are making the trip to the Kodansha House pop-up for a rare US appearance. The authors in attendance during the month are:

  • Shuzo Oshimi (The Flowers of Evil) – October 4-5, 2024
  • Tsubasa Yamaguchi (Blue Period) – October 11 and 13 2024
  • Makoto Yukimura (Vinland Saga) – October 18-19, 2024
  • Kamome Shirahama (Witch Hat Atelier) – October 20, 2024

Reservations for the mangaka Q&A and Signing sessions open on September 10, 2024.

The best news? New York City Comic-Con is right in the middle of all this, so you can hit the convention floor at the Javits Convention Center and grab tickets to see Ghost in the Shell on the big screen that evening. We know we will.
