Superhero fatigue isn't real says Invincible co-creator Robert Kirkman... it's just a dearth of good superhero stories that can't rely on the novelty of superheroes anymore (Sorry, Iron Man!)

Who’s afraid of superhero fatigue? Not Robert Kirkman

There’s been a lot of talk about superhero fatigue lately, but Invincible co-creator Robert Kirkman thinks it’s been blown out of proportion. While it’s true that superhero movies have a harder time at the box office than they did a decade ago, Kirkman believes it’s simply because the novelty of the genre has worn off. Putting a comic book character on the big screen isn’t enough to guarantee a billion dollar box office gross, but that doesn’t mean superhero fatigue is real.

“Doesn’t exist,” Robert Kirkman says during an appearance on The Empire Escape Pod Podcast. “I think that there is no superhero fatigue. I think that the superhero genre has become so popular, and has become so prevalent, that the novelty of it, in and of itself, has worn off. You could just do a movie with Iron Man where Iron Man does Iron Man things and people would go, ‘Oh my god, I can’t believe Iron Man is doing this in a movie.’ And then 10 years later you’re like, ‘I need Iron Man and 12 other guys, and they need to be like fighting in space, and maybe there’s 14 other guys from another movie too.’ And that’s what you need to get excited about a superhero thing.”

“I think that if you say superhero fatigue is superhero movies really have to deliver something unique to stand out, then okay, sure. But if you say people in general are just sick of superhero stories, it’s not a thing. I think that things that don’t stand out are going to get forgotten, because there’s so much stuff going on.”

Kirkman used Invincible as an example, stating that the comic and television series occupy a unique place in the superhero landscape, which is why it’s resonated with audiences.

“I think Invincible does kind of have its own lane. It’s a really intense continuing narrative, kind of like a series of movies, like a TV show, and it has a whole world of superheroes contained within it, and we do really emotional stories. Heavier than a lot of movies are willing to go, and some TV shows, and I think that’s kind of given us our own section to operate in.”

Case in point, Invincible season four broke streaming records for Amazon Prime, and currently has a 100% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. If superhero fatigue is real, someone forgot to tell Invincible.
