The comic book industry has no shortage of fresh faces and new voices, but it is easy, especially for creators from underrepresented communities, to get overlooked. That’s why the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics is so important. The prestigious award, named for the comic book writer/editor who created Static and who worked on animated adaptations like Static Shock and Justice League, is currently accepting nominations for comics published in the 2025 calendar year.

Even if you’ve never read a Dwayne McDuffie comic book, you’ve probably seen at least some of his work. He co-founded Milestone Media, a comic book company focused on underrepresented voices in American comics, where he would create the character Static. Aside from his work in comics, McDuffie was a writer and producer for multiple TV shows like Static Shock, Justice League Unlimited, and the Ben 10 franchise.

After his death in 2011, the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics was set up to continue his legacy of championing minority creators in American comics. Submissions have just opened for comics published in 2025. The deadline for nominations is May 1, 2026. You can find details of how to make a nomination and what the criteria for the award are at DwayneMcDuffie.com.

In addition to opening nominations, the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics has also announced that Eve L. Ewing is joining the selection committee for the prize. The selection committee for the 2025 Dwayne McDuffie Award is:

  • Colleen Doran
  • Eve L. Ewing
  • Heidi MacDonald
  • Jamal Igle
  • Kevin Rubio
  • Geoffrey Thorne
  • Eric Wallace
  • Will J. Watkins
  • Matt Wayne
  • Marv Wolfman

Nominations for the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics are now open through May 1, 2026. You can find out more about the criteria and nominate an eligible comic book creator here.
