Asterix's dog takes center stage in Papercutz's new Dogmatix graphic novel series, launching this fall

The classic European comic gets a spin-off centering on the fiercest canine to ever take on the Roman legions (and his animal companions)

Generations of comic book readers across the world are familiar with Dogmatix — the canine companion to Asterix and Obelix who’s helped them fight against the invading Roman hordes since his introduction in 1963’s Asterix and the Banquet. Now, American audiences will have a chance to see the little terrier terror in action for themselves with the news that Papercutz is bringing the pup’s own solo series to the U.S. for the first time ever, starting this October.

The Asterix series of books — created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo in 1959, originally for the Franco-Belgian anthology series Pilote, but later achieving international fame in collected editions and, later, original graphic novels — is a staple of bookshelves all over the globe, with readers of all ages thrilling to the stories of the Gaulish warrior and his friends defending their village from Roman forces in any number of amusing, thrilling, and occasionally downright ridiculous ways… assisted, of course, by the magic potion that temporarily gives them super-strength. In the decades since the series debuted, it’s gone on to be translated into more than 100 languages, and been adapted into live action and animated movies, video games, and more: Asterix has been a sports mascot, immortalized on French currency, and had both satellites and naval vessels named after him. The series is, in other words, a big deal.

Papercutz started publishing Asterix in the U.S. in 2020, launching a dedicated program to bring the character to American audiences with new translations of classic material, as well as new books previously unpublished in the U.S. — which includes Dogmatix and the Indomitables, Vol. 1, the first in a series of spin-off books featuring Asterix’s faithful pet in his own adventures, by Yves Coulon, Matthieu Choquet and Jérôme Erbin, with art from Philippe Fenech and Jean Bastide.

The book offers an ahistorical, perfectly hysterical take on history, populated by animals fighting back against tyranny. Or, as Papercutz puts it, “Dogmatix and his fine furry (or feathery!) friends are unstoppable - indomitable - in 52 B.C.E. And they stand up to the Roman invaders, like General Labienus and his pack of dogs. Lutetia will not be completely conquered! Enjoy this fantastic spin-off to the timeless classic series ASTERIX, translated and distributed for the first time in North America.”

Sound like fun? It is — and you can see for yourself in the exclusive preview below.

Dogmatix and the Indomitables, Vol. 1 will be released October 8, and is available for pre-order now.
