Tom King and Daniel Sampere are taking a break from DC's Wonder Woman comic - but Red Hood cancellation has helped find guest creators to step in

Wonder Woman creative team Tom King and Daniel Sampere will be taking a two-issue break beginning in January, with Stephanie Williams and Jeff Spokes filling in

There's something unexpected in the advance solicitation text for January 2026's Wonder Woman #29.

It's not the description of the issue itself, which is as follows: "After barely surviving the trials of Mouse Man, Wonder Woman takes a much-deserved night off thanks to her sisters. But are the Amazons ready for their greatest challenge yet? Because in the DC Universe, babysitting always leads to adventure!" Wonder Woman does deserve a night off after everything she's been up to recently, after all - but what might catch people's attention is the creators responsible for the issue... or, rather, the creators whose names aren't attached. For the first time since the 2023 relaunch of the Wonder Woman series, writer Tom King isn't writing the book... and regular artist Daniel Sampere isn't anywhere to be seen, either.

Don't worry, neither creator has left the series. Sources familiar with the subject have told Popverse that Wonder Woman #29 and #30 are a two-part story by Stephanie Williams and Jeff Spokes, publishing ahead of March's new storyline by ongoing series creators Tom King and Dani Sampere.

Sampere confirmed as much on social media after a fan asked about a rumor that he and King were leaving the series after December's #28: "We are taking a short break after 28 to focus on our next big arc coming," he explained, adding, "We are really far from being over."

Ever since Tom King and Daniel Sampere's Wonder Woman run began in 2023, they've become one of the buzziest creative teams in American comics. And for good reason: from the get-go, this current era for Diana has been an ambitious and heartfelt look at the Mighty Amazon in a world of fraught geopolitics. Thanks to Daniel Sampere's art, Wonder Woman's look and stature have been reimagined from the ground up, making her battles and feats seem larger than life without sacrificing the gentle approachability that Diana has at her core.

Wonder Woman will be left in great hands during the creators' two month break, however: Stephanie Williams wrote and co-wrote Wonder Family books like Nubia: Queen of the Amazons and Nubia and the Amazons, which later tied into her work on the Trial of the Amazons crossover event. And, Wonder Woman #29 will mark the first interior art we've seen from Jeff Spokes since the Red Hood series he was on with Gretchen Felker-Martin was canceled after one issue earlier this fall.

Turns out that Tom King isn't stepped entirely away from Wonder Woman in January, however; just a week before Wonder Woman #29 releases this January, DC will publish an anthology book called Wonder Woman: Black & Gold 2026 Special #1. Featuring stories written by Tom King, Mitch Gerads, Steve Orlando, Alyssa Wong, and Jordie Bellaire, Wonder Woman: Black & Gold will bring a new collection of stories rendered in the colors of her iconic Lasso of Truth by artists like Mitch Gerads, Rossi Gifford, Karen S. Darboe, and Paulina Ganucheau. Take a gander at Mitch Gerads' cover below.
