If you look at the credits for Absolute Batman, you won’t see Deniz Camp’s name. However, the writer, who is known for his work on Absolute Martian Manhunter, has been a creator advisor on the series from the beginning. In fact, Camp was one of the first people to see Absolute Batman.

“When I was starting Absolute Batman, I don’t even know what I was thinking,” Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder says during a panel at San Diego Comic Con 2026. “It was literally an outline or a sketch. I wasn’t supposed to show it to anybody. And I just really liked [Deniz’s] stuff. I was like, ‘Hey, I know we don’t know each other, but do you want to Zoom and I’ll show you this script. I would love your opinion.’ And he was the first person to give me real notes.”

“From that point forward, I knew I had maybe found somebody who would make me feel young again in comics. And my relationship with him has been easily one of the most important relationships in my career.”

According to Snyder, Camp reviews every script of the title, giving his feedback and talking through the execution. “I send every issue of Absolute Batman to him to look at it. I talk it through with him, and a couple of other people I trust, and Nick obviously. It’s fun too. I read his stuff early, and we talk it through. The thing I love is that our conversations are never about searching for what the thing is about. It’s about the craft and the execution. And he has such a love of that.”

At times Snyder even uses Camp’s ideas. For example, there’s an upcoming issue where Bruce Wayne attacks his mother, which Snyder says was Camp’s idea.

“There’s an issue coming up in Absolute Batman where I was like, ‘Batman really needs to be brought low. We need to push him further. He attacks his friends. He’s lost in his delusion.’ And Deniz was like, ‘He should attack his mom.’ And I was like, ‘That is exactly what we’ve been building, but I didn’t see.’ Don’t get me wrong, he doesn’t shove Martha, and they don’t fight in the middle of the streets. It’s not like that.”

The idea of Batman attacking his mother is unexpected and provocative, so it should come as no surprise that it came from the mind behind Absolute Martian Manhunter.  Brainstorming sessions like this are the reason the Absolute Universe has been such a success.
