The one thing Frank Quitely would change from All-Star Superman was to make it bolder but simpler

All-Star Superman artist Frank Quitely has thoughts on his own linework in the seminal story he did with Grant Morrison

Frank Quitely changed the game for comic book art at the turn of the millennium. Quitely's distinctive art left behind the harsh and pinched forms of 1990s superhero art and embraced a sense of free-flowing volume and physicality in books like Flex Mentallo, New X-Men, and, of course, All-Star Superman

Now, more than twenty years after All-Star Superman #1 first hit comic book stands, Quitely has some ideas for how he wished he had drawn the acclaimed story for DC Comics.

"In a way, I kind of wish I'd done All-Star Superman differently. I'd [have] penciled it in blue line the same way, but instead of finishing it with sharp graphite technical pencil lines the way I did with We3, I kind of wish I had just inked it relatively simply — maybe it would have felt more like a retro book then," Quitely says in an interview with The Comics Journal. "Maybe it wouldn't have worked quite as well but I always wish it was slightly bolder in line and simpler than it is. For all that I've had some really good coloring over the years. There's part of me that would like to go back and color everything myself."

I'm curious if Quitely would ever be up for recoloring All-Star Superman for a special edition of the book. There's already an Absolute edition of All-Star Superman that is oversized, giving fans a chance to scour every detail of Quitely's artwork, plus a deluxe edition and compact comics edition. What's one more edition of All-Star Superman? I'd be up for seeing what Quitely would do differently this time around.
