DC's Absolute Universe has been an absolute hit. Between books like Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman, Absolute Martian Manhunter, Absolute Green Lantern, and of course, Absolute Superman, this all-new vision of the DC Universe has been a critical and commercial success. Clearly, something about these creator-driven interpretations of classic DC characters has resonated with fans.
Absolute Superman writer Jason Aaron shared at Fan Expo Canada this year the guiding vision he devised for DC's Man of Tomorrow. “The thing that’s most important to me about the Absolute Universe in general is that one, to do new stories, stories that feel more relevant to today with these characters, while also honoring kind of who they’ve always been," Aaron began. "With me with Superman, I’ve looked back at like, ‘What did this character mean to Siegel and Shuster in 1938?’ You know? ‘Who were they, what was this character about?’ And really leaned very much into this idea that this is the ultimate immigrant story. What does that story look like in 2025 versus 1938?”
In Absolute Superman, Superman comes to Earth as an adult, not as an infant. Absolute Kal-El remembers Krypton, where he was raised by his biological parents. And while this Kal-El does meet the Kents on Earth, he has a slightly different sense of justice and perspective than his mainline universe counterpart. Instead of being calm, cool, and collected, this Superman is on fire (literally).
The first collected edition of Absolute Superman is available now in both trade paperback form and as a hardcover.
