It might be a secret in Gotham City, but to everyone in the real world, it’s widely known that the man under Batman’s cape and cowl is called Bruce Wayne. Except when international publishers get involved, apparently.
“There was this publisher who translated the DC comic books, and he changed the characters’ names,” Ramos remembered. He didn’t mean in the sense of translating the character’s superhero names — he was talking about the secret identities of the characters.
“Like, Bruce Wayne? He was Bruno Diaz,” Ramos explained to surprised fans during the Marvel Fanfare panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2025.
“Bruno Diaz? That’s a great name!” interrupted Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort. “I wish Batman was always Bruno Diaz!” (To be fair, he’s not wrong; DC, if you want to revive Batman Incorporated any time soon, Bruno Diaz could make a new international Dark Knight.)
“I struggled to really understand, for a while, that Bruce Wayne was his ‘real’ name, and not Bruno Diaz,” Ramos admitted. That was never a problem for Marvel translations, he continued: “Reed Richards was always Reed Richards, The Invisible Girl was always The Invisible Girl, The Human Torch was always The Human Torch.”
That’s a good thing when it comes to brand management, sure, but let’s be real: doesn’t Bruno Richards just sound a little bit cooler if we’re being honest?
Batman is the most well-known superhero in the world — surprisingly, given how much he loves hanging out in the dark. But between his comics, TV shows, movies, games, and more, DC's Dark Knight is the hero this city/country/world/universe needs, and we have all you need to enjoy him even more:
