Lucasfilm launches its first-ever Kickstarter to revive Star Wars: The Manga

Star Wars and Dark Horse Comics are giving this whole Kickstarter thing a try.

As we near the 50th anniversary of the original Star Wars film, Lucasfilm is dusting off two stunning comic adaptations of that original work, not unlike Rey & Finn did the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And it is partnering with Kickstarter to do it.

Lucasfilm and one of its comic publishing partners Dark Horse Comics has unveiled plans for a massive two-volume set called The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope - The Manga. This 2026 release will include a full reprint of Hisao Tamaki's original Star Wars manga - with an all-new re-translation from Japanese to English, for the first time since 1997.

This two-volume set will come in three flavors: the standard retail edition, a Kickstarter-exclusive Collector's Edition, and a Kickstarter-exclusive Masterpiece Edition (the latter two, of course, assuming the Kickstarter reaches its funding goals). The Collector's Edition will have exclusive covers, while the Masterpiece edition will produce the manga at its original size - and take an additional hardcover volume to do it.

Of course, this is Lucasfilm's first foray into Kickstarter - and a first for Dark Horse as well. Until now, no official Star Wars (or any other Lucasfilm product, licensed or direct) has ever used Kickstarter to solicit funds and take pre-orders, however licensors have used other platforms such Hasbro's Haslab.

Dark Horse & Lucasfilm plan to release The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope - The Manga in 2026, with details on the pre-release Kickstarter here.
