Despite Hollywood’s superhero movie & TV boom, comics remain the medium for true creative freedom - especially at DC, for Scott Snyder

Nowadays, it seems like you can’t turn around without seeing a new superhero movie or television show. In fact, there are so many upcoming releases that Popverse has a dedicated page to keep track of them all. With so many new and exciting stories being told on television and in film, does this mean comics are yesterday’s news?

Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder has heard people say as much, but he says they have it all wrong. In fact, Snyder says that comics like Absolute Batman are taking bigger risks and telling stories that can’t be told anywhere else.

“Everyone is like, superheroes are dead, and movies and TV have eaten our lunch,” Scott Snyder tells Popverse’s Chris Arrant. “No, comics is where they’re renewed. Comics is where they live their best stories. Comics is where we can be nimble and try new things. Where movies and TV now are kind of stuck with a lot of the storytelling they’ve been doing for a while because they have theme parks devoted to those characters. For us, it’s suddenly exciting where we can take these weird swings. We can do these things and maintain the main universe with events like DC K.O. that refresh it in its own way.”
